Rio Carnival

This is the first of what is sure to by many posts about the Rio Carnival Day of Design Fashion Show at WVU.  Through the fabulous WVU fashion design and merchandising program, I was lucky enough to get enrolled in the fashion show production class which entails planning and producing the college’s spring fashion show.  I was elected promtions coordinator and my other lovely PR lady was elected show director.  Woohoo for fashion PR girls! Anyways, I can’t sleep tonight so I’m looking for inspiration for the show’s logo and programs and let me just say that if you google “Rio Carnival” you will definitly be inspired.  Right now I’m feeling more inspired than anything else to book my ticket to this years festival in Brazil. For about an arm and a leg different samba schools, the participants in the parade, offer you the chance to purchase a costume.  The costume allows you to march in the parade. I’m keeping this in mind for when I lose about twenty pounds and have about a million dollars. I hope the design majors are coming up with outfits as wild as the costumes I’m seeing here.  After taking a look at the huge feathery outfits I am more excited than ever to be working on promotions for the show.  As soon as we decide on a logo I’ll upload it.  If anyone’s been to Carnival I’d love to hear your insight!!

I want something like this for the logo, black silhoutte with huge sun-like shape in the background?

They kind of remind me of an exotic version of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Parade...each samba school has hundreds of dancers and 7 or 8 floats....

Butterfly Birthday Princess

Butterfly Dress

Holy CRAP!! This is the cutest birthday card I’ve ever seen in my life. I wish I could wear a blue butterfly dress on my birthdays.  I randomly found this card at Pet Smart??? Hmmm, who to send it to…..

Twinkle Toes

Of all the accessories in the world I must admit shoes are not my favorite.  In my experience they are usually either wildly expensive or wildly cheap, meaning CHEAPLY made.  I’m more of a sparkly jewelry girl myself.  But lately I’ve come across some inspiring little shoes that may just be enough to change my opinion.

My wee green Booties

At PageBoy Salon and Boutique I recently acquired a fabulously unique pair of green boots that I can’t stop wearing.  Although accused of my boyfriend (he just doesn’t understand) of looking like an elf in them, I think the green color is really different and actually seems to go with a lot of different outfits.  I’m a huge fan of bold colors and these shoes are sure to make a bold statement! Plus they are second-hand and were only $30.

Love the little buckle detail

Little Red Riding Shoes

I just realized that during the Christmas holiday I got one pair of green shoes and one pair of red, but I guess I was just feeling festive.  I got these lil’ babies at Urban Outfitters and they perfectly match a red skirt I bought there too.  They are not so comfortable but look great with the skirt and are great going out flats.  You can NEVER have too many flats!

Love the little toe design

Pepto Pink

Say what you will about these old pink shoes, I think they are AWESOME.  These are actually from a very strange store in Athens, OH that mainly sells costumes and costume supplies.  Because Athens has such a  large Halloween celebration a kick-ass costume store is highly necessary.  When I went to school at OU I loved to just hang out in that store and mosey through their endless two-story selection of vintage clothes and costumes.  I actually made a really ridiculous Juicy Couture Girl costume from the stuff they had there one year and these shoes were part of it.  My feet ached for days after but I always thought they were super cute.  I just dug them out of an old box the other day and was really excited because I thought they were gone for good! Now feeling inspired to put together that old costume for a  new post!!

Excuse my messy desk

RING in the New Year

One of my New Year’s resolutions this year is to NOT lose every awesome piece of jewelry I get for Christmas.  I always start off the year with tons of new goodies to wear and then around April I find I’ve lost, misplaced, broken my new stuff.  Not this year, this year I WILL hold onto the awesome new rings I got this year, and I WILL still be wearing them when 2011 comes to an end (fingers crossed).

This year I got a few new rings to ring in the New Year with.

Betsey Johnson Owl Ring

My sister bought this hoot owl Betsey Johnson ring from Macey’s a few weeks ago.  Love, love, love… It may be a little off season, but I will wear it all season every season.  The pink rhinestone eyes adorable!  Just another reason to be Betsey Johnson obsessed! Also got a pair of Betsey shades but that’s for another time. ; )

Sundance Silver Ring

If your not familiar with Sundace you should be! Founded by Robert Redford, Sundance jewelry is made in Utah on the land Redford built at the base of Mount Timpanogos.  The land became the “Sundance Village” and they have established a successful business, that has a very extensive catalogue for those of us who don’t find ourselves at the base of Mount Timpanogos very often.  Anyways, they make gorgeous jewelry including this fab ring my wonderful mother purchased for me!

Vintage Ring from Pageboy Boutique and Salon

The other day I added a post called Love For Lawrenceville and confessed my love for a few boutiques in Pittsburgh.  One of the best of the boutiques was Pageboy where I got several things.  There were tons of crazy rings, earrings, necklaces, etc but I had to choose just one.  This ring really inspired me.  I think its so fun and whacky, and I can’t wait to rock it on New Year’s Eve.  Mwha Pageboy!

Ohh Christmas Tree…

Chirp Chirp

Charlie Brown Xmas Tree

Christmas came a little early this year for me thanks to my ohh so thoughtful boyfriend.  Yesterday, we exchanged Christmas gifts and he surprised me with this adorable little jewelry tree! I’m not sure where its from ( he works part-time at    Target, so that might be a hint) but I just adore it, especially the little birdies on the branches.  As you can see at first it looked  a little dead without any ornaments to cheer it up.  But with a little Christmas magic it perked right up under the weight of my accessories.  You may recognize some of the jewelry from ghosts of blog posts past, but they just looks so much more festive hanging from my new little jewelry hanger.  Fellas, if you wanna make a disorganized girl who’s always loosing her favorite pair of earrings happy…buy her one of these! Merry Christmas!!

Fifty Dresses That Changed The World: And the SIXTH that Made it to My Closet

Julia Roberts in Valentino, Accepting her Oscar

Back by popular demand, well everyone seemed to like my last post Fifty Dresses That Changed the World: And Five That Made it Into My Closet , I am adding a sixth.  In the original post I chose five dresses from the book Fifty Dresses That Changed The World and found their connection to my closet.  Let me credit the fabulous book again by the Design Museum and say they are the only reason I can speak (somewhat) intelligently about fashion design. I had originally intended to put this dress in the first post but ran out of time.  Julia Roberts in Valentino and a yellow/black dress from Urban Outfitters? Where’s the connection you say? Read on and all will be revealed. ; )

The Look: Italian designer, Valentino, designed this sweeping, flowing black and white dress to capture the essence of Old Hollywood and was worn by Julia Roberts at the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.  The dress was actually made in 1982!

Impact: Julia’s decision to wear this dress legitimized the rise of vintage wear and made it popular. She made vintage chic (God bless her!!).  The move to wear vintage at the high profile event, especially since she was up for and won an Oscar, was an act of resistance in a world of fashion where everyone’s always search for something new!

My Closet: At first I noticed similarities between these dresses because of the sheer black fabric between the busts.  But after reading I see that this vintage inspired, not actually vintage, dress from Urban Outfitters has a lot to credit Julia for.  A million things in my closet are imitation vintage but I really think this yellow slip covered by sheer takes the cake.  It reminds me of an old fashioned lingerie.

Fifty Dresses That Changed The World – Five that Made It Into My Closet

If you’ve ever seen the movie The Devil Wears Prada you certainly remember the speech by Meryl Streep ( aka Miranda Priestly ) where she demonstrates how even fashion flunky Anne Hathaway’s character’s closet has been affected the by fashion industry without even realizing it.  But if you don’t remeber:

Miranda Priestly: This… stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select… I don’t know… that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn’t it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.

Well the very fun-read of a book Fifty Dresses that Changed the World by the Design Museum, in my opinion, sort of elaborates on Priestly’s speech. The book takes you chronologically through 50 iconic dresses that changed the fashion industry including Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from The Seven Year Itch, Krystal Carrington’s dress from Dynasty and Cher’s memorable Oscar dress by Bob Mackie. All of the dresses in this book changed the fashion industry in both subtle and explosive ways, which got me thinking about how they have made their way to my own closet.

1.  The New Look By Christian Dior

The New Look

The look: Dior’s “new look” was launched in 1947, post WW II.  The look radiated optimism after the war  and featured a full-skirt, waspy waists and soft shoulders to capture an ultra-feminine look.

Big Change: Set precedent of by Dior selling exclusive rights to individual designers which allowed the look to be worn world-wide.

My Closet: Purchased at Urban Outfitters, this dress has a full skirt and soft shoulders just like the dresses of the New Look.  The tight waist gives the wearer a similar silhouette.

2. The Chanel Suit

Audrey in Chanel

The Look: Introduced in the 1930’s, Coco Chanel’s suit allowed women to be elegant, comfortable and mean business all at the same time, for the first time.

Impact: Chanel established a look for women that is the equivalent of the three-button suit for men.

My Closet: Although my blazers are not Chanel( cannot afford!!), without the innovation of Chanel’s business look for women we might still be wearing dresses to work everyday.  Wearing blazers makes me feel confident and professional.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s LBD

LBD and Audrey

The Look: In 1961 Audrey Hepburn wore a black dress by Givenchy in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Images of Hepburn in this dress are iconic and demonstrate a vulnerability mixed with confidence.  We all know wearing our favorite LBD makes us feel confident but not too “loud”.  I have quite a few for that very reason.

Impact: Need I explain?  Well theres the obvious recreation of the dress in every style, and of course the iconic image of the film and the actress.  However, in Audrey’s case Givenchy, who believed Audrey’s style was that of “a delicate creature”, gave her a new sense of urbane sensuality.

My Closet: I have a LOT of little black dresses, but I chose to feature this one because although the cut, style, material etc. are very different from Audrey’s dress it goes to show how style can evolve.  I bought this dress in a very strange little boutique in NYC ( cannot remember the name).  But always gives me confidence and makes me feel hot!

4. Twiggy in Bill Gibb for premier of The Boyfriend

Twiggy

The Look: Bill Gibb was known for capturing the fashion of the hippie movement.  He is said to “have captured the romance of the hippie movement, combining the romance of mediaevalism with a syncretic mix of shape, texture and colour plundered with kaleidoscopic diversity of cultures”.  He used patterns, pleats and folds to cover the body.

Impact: Recently, a new interest in his dresses has revived his unique style.

My Closet: This is a dress from Lucky Brand that I got a few years ago.  The dress reminded me instantly of Twiggy’s because of the multiple layers, the pleated skirt and “hippie” influence.

Whimsical dress

5. Zandra Rhodes Painted Chiffon Dress

The Look: British designer, Rhodes, created a unique look that worked off a wide      variety of influences: ethnic, romantic, historic, theatrical etc.  The flowy sleevs and plunging necklines gave her dresses a “dreamy femininity”.

Impact: Innovative garmet structure ( I dont’ know enough about garmet structure to comment, but I’ll take the books word for it haha)

My Closet: This dress from Urban Outfitters mimics the “dreamy femininity” of Rhodes dresses.  Also the patterns remind me of the painted patterns on Rhodes’ chiffon gowns.

Love the delicate patterns

Three Reasons To Love (Tolerate) Winter

Personally, I despise winter.  Nothing depresses me more than short days and freezing temperatures, which is why I want to move to southern CA.  People are always telling me that I’ll miss the seasons, but I’m fairly confident I WILL NOT miss walking through a foot of snow in Morgantown’s uncleared sidewalks and freezing my a** off!! The only redeeming quality winter has, as far as I can see, is providing the opportunity to showcase a few accessories that just don’t work in warmer weather.  Hats I can take or leave, and mittens are well….kinda boring.  But, I really really like scarves!! Then again I see people wear scarves on the beach. So sorry winter, you don’t even have that going for you!! Anyways, every Christmas I request a new scarf or two, and for your viewing pleasure I have once again taken not so good quality pics of the finest of my collection.

These three scarves are my favorite because their unique texture and patterns really make them standout.  My favorite by far is the silk sea green scarf by Elegant Additions.  I wish I was a better photographer so I could fully capture the texture of this handmade scarf, but take my word that the intricate combination of fabrics makes the scarf almost web-like.  I also have a similar purple one, but I like the green better.

The thick wool scarf is from Urban Outfitters.  Its sooo warm and goes with just about everything.  It caught my eye because of the alternating patterns.

Lastly, the bright stringy scarf is from Target! Target is obviously awesome, but this scarf was super cheap and I just love the bright colors that take away from winter dreariness. Not very warm, but cheers me up when the snow truck manages only to turn the snow from white to slushie gray.

Blurry I know, but wanted to capture the weaving colors up close
